Food - one of culture’s indicators
While talking about the differences of different cultures, you definitely must talk about the interesting factors that appear in their culinary world.
Obviously, we all eat something, but in different cultures the food people eat in their day to day lives can differ a lot, and it is important to learn about that from early ages. It can be taught in the kindergarten by doing these activities:
- Topical days - those can be different weeks, when you spend time talking about a culture or those can be separate days, when you direct your attention to talking about a different nation and it’s eating habits.
- Family evenings - every family presents their favorite or traditional food. The additional benefit to this is getting to know your classmates better and developing teamwork in between parents and their children.
- You can invite to the kindergarten a representative of a certain culture (a parent or a teacher), so that he or she can lead a class, while together with children cooking a certain food.
- It can be done creatively as well - you can arrange fruit days, when everyone takes a fruit to the kindergarten and they can research which countries eat it the most, where does it grow and in which countries it can be only bought in stores. It can be also done with vegetables and spices.
The most memorable activities are the ones in which the child has taken part in - tasted something, cooked something or just done a few tasks in regard to it. Another good thing to do is using colorful pictures and videos. Before organizing these activities, it has to be taken account in that not every child can eat everything, so beforehand it should be discussed with the parents. Another thing to keep in mind is that maybe you shouldn’t get carried away with exotic and spicy foods that children are not used to.
